encaustic

happy accidents!
some days I start out with a great idea
I can see it in my head, sometimes I dream about painting
then when it comes to getting it onto the canvas it can go wrong
for some reason I was having a hard time
I just wasn't "feeling it"
after several breaks and almost giving up
I decided to give it one more chance
after layering and scraping
ironing and adding more color
more scraping and ironing
I finally liked what I was seeing
so I added a photo transfer
and after six hours of pure frustration
a beautiful painting
lesson learned
never give up
but more importantly
patience!!!!

back to school-encaustic class

where did the summer go??
i can't believe it was time to get back in the groove
but at the same time it seems like a long time since i've done any painting
it was nice to get out the brushes and wax out again !!!

today's class was all about texture
inspired by all the pottery i found while visiting antique/flea markets this summer

i was forced to work with color combinations that i would never consider

and some colors i never use

lots of layers , scrapping and the mini blow torch gave this piece an interesting effect

abandoned

on one of my country road trips i found this abandoned house
since no one was around and i was feeling brave
i decided to take a closer look

the kitchen had the best grunge and texture
from the floor to the ceiling

the upstairs bedrooms had the best wallpaper

i wish i had gotten a sample

encaustic class

it was hard to be inside today, it was 27c
but once i got out my boards i was inspired by a class mate
she was painting with blue and the map i used for my background
had some yellow in it so this became my palette for the day
above my finished piece, i used one of my favorite tree photos and
a section from a poem by e.e.cummings
below a detail shot of the texture, you can see part of the
map coming through the wax

encaustic class

for class i was inspired by a photo i had taken in new orleans
as i wondered through the garden district finding beautiful home after beautiful home
i finally found some wonderful grunge!
the garage/coach house was perfect! for creating texture in encaustic
above, the photo enhanced in ps and made b/w,
layers of wax in siena, umber, ochre and orange
scrapping and ironing to add contrast and
some white to simulate the plaster
then a little black oil paintto age it a bit more

texture challenge part 2

another wonderful submission from eden for my texture challenge

a few people asked about my project so above i have all the elements i used
2 of my photos, 4 of the encaustic textures found on my flickr page
some text and a clipping mask from shadowhouse
below right and left are variations using different blending modes
from the original middle project

so even when i think i have finished a project
i always go back the next day with a clear head and
play some more, you just never know what can happen
and a month from now, when i am bored or don't know what to work on
i will try adding another photo or some element
to change it again
i always save the pdf flie so i can remember what i did

late, lost and forgotten

not sure what happened with yesterdays post

i set the image size to large and got medium

and then i noticed i didn't add in my work

(above, a tree from my backyard, using grunge 1, duplicated using

multiply and overlay blending modes, then added grunge 4 and a frame)

as well , somehow marion's e-mail got lost??

i've had this happen before and wonder how many times

that i don't know about!!frustrating and sorry marion

(above her beautiful work using 5 different textures)

and our last second ( worth the wait) sample is from eden

(i was too tired last nite to add them in)

which made for some interesting effects

above a simple photo from a few weeks ago

i added grunge layer 5 and 6

set the blending modes to vivid light and difference

all these textures can be downloaded from my flickr page here

i will post results next tuesday so if you would like to join in

my favorite tree

every time i visit the farm i have to stop and take a look at my favorite tree

no matter what time of year it always looks amazing

for my last texture challenge i added 8 telephone and hydro poles to my flickr page

while playing around i decide to take just one of the textures cropped it square

and duplicate it 4 times rotating each layer first 90 degrees then 180 and 270

creating a new texture which i used in the above project

(available on my flickr page to use)

i added to my tree photo and set the blending mode to color dodge

i also added a bokeh layer and some text

finishing it off with a frame
